Review: Melody´s Key - Dallas Coryell

A 19-year-old girl, a gay best friend, a famous pop star, a heart wrenching love story between the girl and the star, a bitter break-up, and I think, more I needn´t tell.
Sounds like a typical love story, but the writing makes it unique.

Melody´s Key is about Tegan Lockwood, whose family owns a holiday place at which the famous pop star Mason Keane takes a timeout. At first, Tegan isn´t very excited of their guest, but soon she learns that Mason isn’t what he´s rumored to be and they get to know each other better and better. Yet it´s difficult for Tegan to let someone come close to her, because of a bad experience in the past.
Tegan and Mason have one important thing in common – music. Mason is the first person ever to her Tegan´s self-written, they even end up writing songs together – songs about their love. The songs are very romantic, just like Tegan herself is. She sees the world in vivid romantic detail, which is reflected by the writing style (which I absolutely love!).
At first the writing seems too wordy, but actually it´s meant to be a bit like poetry with lots of descriptions and imagery, which also makes the book “intensive”. While Tegan and Mason are together at Lockwood´s manor, the writing reflects their love and that Tegan likes to be at home, where everything is familiar. Later on, after the Lockwood´s financial problems become too difficult to handle and the surprising way out to keep the house, Tegan and Mason meet again at one of his concerts in New York. In the meantime, there happened a lot, especially with the development of Tegan and Mason´s relationship. Tegan discovers that Mason, too, had bad experiences and also he has dark secrets, just after they slept together for the first time. So it occurs that they break up. However, as soon as Tegan arrives in New York – originally to attend university – the writing changes (in my opinion). Now it reflects the odd and unknown situation Tegan is in, outside her comfort zone, and also the precipitance of New York.
There is one other important thing, that means a lot to Tegan: old love letters between two of her ancestors. The letters are kind of an “idol” for her own love with Mason – luckily that doesn´t refer to the end. The love between Tegan´s ancestors died due to war, but Tegan and Mason´s love is still alive.

Melody´s Key is definitely a perfect reading for both fans of love stories and poetry. For me, I can tell that I fell in love with this book! Also, I hope we´ll hear more of the author, Dallas Coryell, precisely because I adore his writing style. Likewise, I want to THANK YOU, Dallas Coryell, for the great opportunity to read Melody´s Key!

The novel is rated 4 out of 5 stars!
